The hobo bag: what it is, slouchy or structured, and which strap drop to choose
A hobo bag is a soft shoulder bag with a curved top that dips in the middle when you carry it. It usually has one handle or strap and closes with a zip. Classic hobos are slouchy and roomy; structured hobos keep a cleaner line. Choose by three things: the handle drop (25–30 cm (9.8–11.8 in) for the shoulder, less for the hand), the width (about 30 cm (11.8 in) takes a phone, wallet and sunglasses) and how much slouch you want.
What makes a bag a hobo
Look at the top line. On a hobo it curves down between the two ends of the handle, like a crescent or a soft V. The body is soft enough to relax when you carry it, and there is one handle, not two. The name is usually traced to the bundle that travelling workers carried over the shoulder in early twentieth-century America: a soft load hanging from one point.
That sets it apart from its neighbors. A tote is open at the top and has two handles. A crossbody hangs on a long strap across the body. A baguette is long, low and flat, worn high under the arm. A hobo is rounder and deeper, and it hangs from the shoulder or the hand. For every shape side by side, see our guide to bag types and sizes.
Slouchy or structured
A slouchy hobo has no stiffening at all. It folds against the body, takes a lot and looks relaxed with knitwear and denim. The price of that ease: things sink to the bottom, and a slouchy bag looks tired when it is half empty.
A structured hobo keeps the curved top but holds its body. Firmer leather, a dense lining and a zip keep the shape when the bag is light and keep things in place when it is full. It looks at home with a blazer as well as with jeans, so it goes to the office too.
Ours lean structured. Josefine is a softened rectangle with a V-shaped zip top and a short handle on metal rings. Josy, her smaller sister, has the same zip-top idea on an adjustable strap. Debut is a small gathered bag with soft pleats along the top: half hobo, half evening clutch.
Handle drop: the number that decides how a hobo sits
The handle drop is the distance from the top of the handle to the top of the bag, measured with the handle pulled straight. It tells you where the bag will sit before you try it on.
- Under 15 cm (5.9 in): in the hand or on the wrist. Debut's handle drop is 10 cm (3.9 in).
- About 20–30 cm (7.9–11.8 in): in the crook of the arm, and on the shoulder over a shirt or a light knit. Josefine's handle drop is 31 cm (12.2 in); she is carried in the hand or in the crook of the arm.
- A long, adjustable strap: on the shoulder or across the body. Josy's strap is 110 cm (43.3 in) in total and adjusts.
In winter, add a few centimeters. A coat lifts the shoulder line, and a drop that felt right over a T-shirt can squeeze under the arm over wool.
Three hobos, measured
| Bag | Size | How it is carried | What fits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Debut | 25.5 × 9 × 11 cm (10 × 3.5 × 4.3 in), 200 g (7.1 oz) | short handle, 10 cm (3.9 in) drop: hand or wrist | phone, card case, keys, lipstick, a coat-check ticket | $485 |
| Josy | 23 × 15 × 9 cm (9.1 × 5.9 × 3.5 in), 400 g (14.1 oz) | adjustable strap, 110 cm (43.3 in): shoulder or across the body | phone, card case or slim wallet, keys, earbuds, lipstick | $340 |
| Josefine | 30 × 20 × 10 cm (11.8 × 7.9 × 3.9 in), 600 g (1.3 lb) | short handle on metal rings, 31 cm (12.2 in) drop: hand or crook of the arm | phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses, lipstick, a small notebook | $360–390 |
All three close: Josefine and Josy with a zip, Debut with a magnet. On a soft bag that matters more than on a tote, because a hobo leans when you set it down.
Which size to choose
Small, under 25 cm (9.8 in) wide: an evening or a few hours in town. Phone, cards, keys, lipstick. Debut and Josy are this size.
Medium, about 28–35 cm (11–13.8 in): the everyday hobo. At 30 cm (11.8 in) wide and 10 cm (3.9 in) deep, Josefine takes a wallet and sunglasses in a case next to the phone, and the zip keeps them in.
Large, 40 cm (15.7 in) and more: a weekend or work hobo. We do not make one. If your day includes a laptop, a tote holds it better than any soft bag; our guide to a leather tote for work lists sizes by laptop.
Proportion helps too. On a petite frame a smaller hobo keeps the line light. On a tall frame or over a long coat, a 30 cm (11.8 in) bag balances better than a tiny one.
How to wear a hobo bag
In the hand or the crook of the arm. This is where a structured hobo looks most composed. Josefine in black with a navy blazer, a white shirt and straight jeans, or over the arm of a trench.
On the shoulder. The classic way for a slouchy hobo: tucked under the arm, close to the body. Josy on a shortened strap sits like this.
Across the body. Only with a long strap. Josy, lengthened, frees both hands for a market, a museum or a trip.
In the evening. Debut on the wrist with a black dress or a gray suit. Its gathered top catches the light the way a clutch would, without the need to hold it all night.
Smooth leather, suede and color
Smooth calfskin is the easier choice for every day and for rain: Josefine comes in Black, Brown and Marsala, a deep burgundy; Josy in Black. Suede is softer and deeper in color: Josefine in Choco and Navy Blue, Josy in Choco, Debut in Choco, Lime, Orange and Olive. Suede prefers dry days; our guide to leather or suede explains the care, and chocolate and burgundy bags covers the two deep colors of the season.
